Introduce BBCSDL to indie game developers & make BBCSDL survive

Post by kigohhere »

I could not visit this forum for about one year. I guess that the hosting service provider of www.bbcbasic.co.uk blocked me. Fortunately, I could visit this forum again a few days ago.

I want to say that the following type of contest is not too useful for enlarging the user base of BBCSDL. A complete plan is what you require.

Wow...no feedback? I am so surprised!!!

My opinions on BBCSDL(I am only an amateur programming hobbyist.) ---- 4 main points:
1. Since the most active sub-forum is this 'Graphics and Games' sub-forum, this phenomenon reflects that BBCSDL is a very suitable tool for game development. The focus of promotion for BBCSDL should be put on game programming.

2. BBCSDL needs detailed game programming tutorials for novice.

3. BBCSDL doesn't need a game programming contest within the user commnuity. Nevertheless, BBCSDL users who are good at game development should be encouraged to participate in game contest or game jam outside the user community. Their entries can easily attract outsiders to become BBCSDL users.

4. BBCSDL needs an 'effective' showcase of nice games.

Hello!

Let me explain the following suggestion:

3. BBCSDL doesn't need a game programming contest within the user commnuity. Nevertheless, BBCSDL users who are good at game development should be encouraged to participate in game contest or game jam outside the user community. Their entries can easily attract outsiders to become BBCSDL users.

There are many game jams in indie game developers' world. Some jams are very popular. If some BBCSDL users(for example, David Williams) are able to submit high-quality entries to these popular game jams(Not Syntaxbomb's contests because they are not too famous), these high-quality entries will be very effective promotion for BBCSDL actually. Some game developers who never use BBCSDL will be interested in trying to use BBCSDL for game development. :P ;)

I still want to say some things about the following point. This point is very important as well:

2. BBCSDL needs detailed game programming tutorials for novice.

BBCSDL is a general purpose language. Therefore, it is difficult to find complete game development tutorial. If a step-by-step tutorial for BBCSDL in game development is availabe, many beginners will be willing to learn and use BBCSDL to develop games. There are two examples: QB64 and PureBasic. Both BASIC languages are general purpose languages but systematic tutorials about game development exist:

QB64
https://qb64sourcecode.com/

PureBasic
https://www.purebasic.fr/english/viewtopic.php?t=58232

Most beginners will not be afraid of learning and using BBCSDL in game development if they can learn with a systematic and good BBCSDL tutorial about game development! ;)

Hi, I want to try to explain the folllowing point:

4. BBCSDL needs an 'effective' showcase of nice games.

An effective showcase is so important for an effective promotion for BBCSDL. The following webpage is a showcase but it is not an effective showcase. The webpage can't generate an effective promotion for BBCSDL. It is because indie game developers can't discover the webpage easily. Gamers can't easily discover the webpage, too.

http://proggies.uk/bbcsdl/index.html

For videos, many people use Youtube. For indie games, many gamers and indie game developers use Itch. If these nice game are placed on Itch, many gamers will know the existence of these nice games. Many indie game developers will also be able to know the existence of BBCSDL.

https://itch.io/

Furthermore, an introduction webpage for BBCSDL can also be created on Itch.io. For example, this game engine:
https://comigo.itch.io/ct

Introduce BBCSDL to indie game developers & make BBCSDL survive

Finally, I still have an opinion.

The author(Richard Russell) of BBCSDL needs to be an active participant in this forum. He needs to communicate with users here because:

1. Only he is able to solve some difficult issues about BBCSDL faced by some users.

2. Most users want to know roadmap to future versions of BBCSDL.

3. Users will have more confidence in the future of BBCSDL if he is active here.

It seems that he does not appear here any more. :|

Hi Kigohhere,

I think a lot of us are sad that Richard feels unable to post here, and would welcome his return, but I think we have to respect his decision and his reasons.

As for the rest of the (rather one-sided!) discussion on this thread, I don't disagree that it would be great for BBC-SDL to be showing it's face and potential in other fora, but there are a (very) limited number of people with the skills to do that, and they may have other priorities. If you are one of them, I'm sure we'd all be cheering you on if you use BBC-SDL to enter games competitions in other fora.

Best wishes,

D
