difference between BBB Basic for windows and BBC basi forn SDL

Post by BobH »

Hi

I'm not really a new member because I have been using BBC Basic for many years - but I lost my user name so I registered as new.

A few months ago my desktop was destroyed by a ransom ware virus which deleted my files. I junked it.. I still have BBC basic on an old laptop but I want to put it on my new desktop. (

I think my first BBC basic was on a Vista although it could have been earlier.

My new desktop is Windows 11 (64 bit)

If I download BBC Basic for SDL will my programs on BBC Basic for Windows work?

I thought I had a copy of BBC Basic on disk but it turns all I had was the Shortcut.

There's a reasonably comprehensive list of the differences here, so hopefully that will enable you to determine whether your programs will work or not.

As I've said before, there's no reason at all why you shouldn't have both BBC BASIC for Windows and BBC BASIC for SDL 2.0 installed, indeed you could have both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of BBCSDL plus BBCTTY and BB4W installed and have the full set of Windows editions available.

You also have the option of using SDLIDE for BB4W which gives you access to the BB4W run-time-engine through SDLIDE, so that you don't need to be familiar with two different IDEs.

All those options are completely free and unlimited so long as you don't need to build standalone BB4W executables (you can build both 32-bit and 64-bit BBCSDL executables without having to pay anything).
