I can't see how to get to the actual forum on bbcbasic.uk - like Jeremy I get to the "splash screen", but can't get to the actual forum. I get a 404 error if I go to bbcbasic.uk/forum/index.php
Best wishes,

Moving bbcbasic.co.uk to a new host
Re: Moving bbcbasic.co.uk to a new host
Oh, that's very interesting (and concerning). If you are using a PC can you please hover your mouse over the 'Dismiss' link and look in the status bar to see if it tells you the destination URL, that is, where it will go when the link is clicked. I think most browsers will tell you that.
What you should see when you hover your mouse over the link is https://www.bbcbasic.net/forum/index.php. But given that you say that clicking on Dismiss gives you a 404 error I'm guessing you don't.
Please let me know what URL that link is pointing to on your system and, if you can tell (I think it should be in the address bar at the top), where clicking it actually takes you. Then can you repeat the exercise with the current website (bbcbasic.co.uk/forum) and report those URLs as well.
That should hopefully give me enough information to trace the cause of what is a most peculiar bug. Thanks for reporting it.

Re: Moving bbcbasic.co.uk to a new host
If I understand Richard's recent posts correctly, there ISN'T a forum on bbcbasic.uk. It looks like you also thought there was. Only the cloned "landing page" where one gets the message pane & "Dismiss" button is on bbcbasic.uk. So it's correct that if one clicks the "Dismiss" button (which is a link) on either the old or new copy of the "landing page" in either case one ends up at the forum at "www.bbcbasic.net".
Re: Moving bbcbasic.co.uk to a new host
It surely can't be that, because there ISN'T a forum on bbcbasic.co.uk either!JeremyNicoll wrote: ↑Sun 07 Jan 2024, 19:00 If I understand Richard's recent posts correctly, there ISN'T a forum on bbcbasic.uk. It looks like you also thought there was.

David is reporting a difference between bbcbasic.co.uk and bbcbasic.uk, and whatever method you use to access the forum there shouldn't be a difference. If you go via the landing page it should succeed on both, if you go direct to the (non-existent) forum it should fail on both.

What we have to explain is why David can successfully access the forum from one, but gets a 404 error from the other.
Re: Moving bbcbasic.co.uk to a new host
I think I made this perfectly clear in the initial post of this thread, but just to be sure there is no misunderstanding, what I am interested in (and all I am interested in) is confirming - or not - that the 'current' website bbcbasic.co.uk and the 'clone' website bbcbasic.uk are behaving exactly the same way.
Once we are confident that everything is OK, the 'current' hosting service will be cancelled and bbcbasic.co.uk moved to the new host. At that point I won't be able to go back if something isn't right.

Richard
I have not had time until today to check out the new forum.
I followed your instructions searching bbcbasic.uk. This brings up what is being described as a "splash screen". Under the Forums header I clicked on Forum and this brought up DDRM's "Dismiss" notice. Clicking on Dismiss brings up the forum at index.php .
I keep trying, but I can't get the link to come up with the full address. Don't know why. It is enclosed by [url} at both ends.

"I get a 404 error if I go to bbcbasic.uk/forum/index.php"
which NO SURPRISE AT ALL, because you didn't install a forum at that cloned website.
It's not clear if he got that URL by clicking somewhere or whether he hand-crafted it to mimic the actual forum's main page.

Re: Moving bbcbasic.co.uk to a new host
Actually there is! I moved the forum to a new host about a week ago, the post announcing that is here. I'm also interested in any regressions that move may have caused, of course, but they are off-topic in this thread, which is about moving the website*
Perhaps I have caused unnecessary confusion by first moving the forum to a new host and only a week later making provision to move the website to a different new host (I won't bore you with why they are different).
Of course both moves were triggered by the same objective: to move away from my current hosting provider which, whilst being excellent in terms of reliability and support, has caused too many issues because of the bandwidth limit.
* I forgive anybody for saying 'forum' when they meant 'website' because I made exactly the same mistake myself earlier today in an email. I don't know why, but somehow my mind (what's left of it after the continuing ravages of Alzheimer's Disease) is constantly mixing them up.

Yes, but he also said "I get to the 'splash screen', but can't get to the actual forum". If he gets to the landing page at bbcbasic.uk/forum, but clicking on Dismiss doesn't take him to the forum, there is something wrong. Clearly he can access the forum normally, so he knows how to!!!JeremyNicoll wrote: ↑Sun 07 Jan 2024, 21:09 What he actually said was:
